Is Tomato Sauce a Good Substitute for the Nutrition in a Tomato?

Ketchup is a salty and sweet kind of sauce found in almost every household and restaurant. People put it on hotdogs, French fries, hamburgers, meatloaf, and a multitude of other things, including eggs and noodles. There’s no doubt that ketchup is quite a tasty and popular condiment.

Although, it can be used as more than a condiment, it can also be used as an ingredient in a wide variety of recipes when you get creative with your cooking. But some may wonder how it’s made, and if it can be a good substitute for the nutrition found in tomatoes in the households that can’t quite afford the fresh, and usually, more expensive fruits.

To begin with, ketchup is made in many different ways. Some ways are altogether without tomatoes. The ketchup that includes tomatoes can be composed of many ingredients, most of which would be expected, such as garlic and salt. Others are less detectable, such as cinnamon. But the question is whether or not the tomato concentrate found in a normal bottle of ketchup can measure up to the nutrition found in the average tomato. The answer to that question is about 50/50.

Ketchup, or catsup, can provide as much or even more Vitamin C for you as a fresh tomato. It also has a small amount of protein, providing it with its own superior health benefits. However, since most ketchup contains high amounts of salt and sugar, the benefits are somewhat lost in the negatives. It would be much wiser to seek out a brand which is healthier, lacking the often large amount of sodium and carbohydrates that regular ketchup provides.

If you can’t find one of the healthier kinds of ketchup in your local store, you could simply make your own. The main ingredients are some sort of tomato derivative, such as tomato juice, or for thickness, tomato paste, and water. The extra spices, though, commonly vinegar, garlic powder, salt, and onion powder, are optional. You can use whatever spices you like in a homemade recipe. Those are merely the ingredients that most often work to provide that well known “ketchup” taste.

For those of you who may want to try something a little different, ketchup can mean any general sauce. Though tomato is the most popular kind, people have been known to make different kinds of ketchup out of grapes, cucumbers, and even bananas. This was done before tomato ketchup even came around and wiped out all of the competition.

That’s right, when making your own, even tomato is only a preference. There are plenty of different recipes out there for the variety of ketchups, but making your own may be more fun. And, if you choose, it can also be healthier than ketchup bought in stores. When making your own, you can skip out on the unnecessarily high amount of unwanted sodium and carbs that better known brands contain, overshadowing the benefits. This offers you a more unique taste that you enjoy, and all of the nutrients in a regular bottle of ketchup.
